The current Laboratory was created in 2016 by merging the laboratories of Bionanotechnology and of Microbiology and Virology.

The Laboratory of Bionanotechnology was organized in 2009 on the base of a practical microbiology course at the NSU Department of Natural Sciences. Based on this laboratory with the participation of the NSU Section of molecular biology and several laboratories of the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences), the Scientific and Educational Center "Molecular Microbiology and Virology" ("Molvir") was created in 2010. The Center has carried out the research project "Detection of viral pathogens relevant to public health in Western Siberia (hepatitis, gastroenteritis, and aseptic meningitis) - study of their genetic diversity in order to develop and improve their diagnostic" and some other similar research projects.
The Laboratory of Microbiology and Virology was created in 2011 under the supervision of a well-known specialist in the field of molecular biology of cancer, head of the Laboratory of Cell Proliferation of the Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow), head of Laboratory at the department of Molecular Genetics of the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute (USA) and head of the Laboratory of Molecular Biology at Case Western Reserve University, Doctor of Biological sciences Professor Peter Chumakov in frames of Megagrant devoted to the development of oncolytic viruses.

Today the Laboratory carries out development of new oncolytic viruses, which is unique in Russia, studies the genetic diversity of circulating viral strains among the Siberian population, works on the improvement of virus taxonomy and methodologies regarding biosecurity and biosafety.

In 2014-2017, the main following results were obtained:

  • The high antitumor activity of the original strain LMV of the adenovirus serotype 6 has been shown in vitro (on different cancer cell lines) and in vivo (on the model of subcutaneous xenografts of human glioblastoma U87 into SCID mice).
  • For the first time a special genetically engineered vector has been designed based on a whole copy of the genome of adenovirus type 6 (35,000 base pairs), cloned into the plasmid vector of Escherichia coli bacterium. The design and construction of recombinant derivatives of this virus has been started in order to produce new generation anticancer adenovirus-based drugs.
  • In frames of the Scientific and Educational Center "Molecular Microbiology and Virology" ("Molvir") a few research projects devoted to the taxonomic, molecular-biological and epidemiological characteristics of representatives of viral families that cause gastrointestinal disease and hepatitis: noroviruses, enteroviruses, astroviruses, hepatitis viruses, all circulating in the Asian part of Russia have been developed and fulfilled.
  • With the active participation of Laboratory’s researchers, the taxonomy of the family Filoviridae was significantly improved.
