NSU is an educational base of the largest center for the studies of indigenous languages of Siberia.

Research is conducted within the following fields:

  •  Tungus-Manchu Studies – Institute of Philology of the SB RAS hosts the unique research department, the only department in the world conducting comprehensive research of the endangered languages of small peoples of the North, namely, the peoples of Tungus family.

  •  Indigenous languages of Siberia – this division is based at the Institute of Philology, SB RAS, and brings together the researchers of Turkic, Finno-Ugric and Chukchi-Kamchatkan languages. The major achievements within the division are the developments in the syntax of complex and simple sentences in various languages of Altaic, Finno-Ugric, and paleo-Asiatic language families. Experimental phonetic research of the indigenous languages of Siberia is also conducted; history, vocabulary and dialects of Turkic languages of Siberia are studied.

  •  Folklore of the peoples of Siberia – long-term academic project of the Institute of Philology, SB RAS on the search, fixation and preservation of the samples of oral and poetic creativity of the peoples of Siberia and the Far East.
